Melinda Russek-Abstract artist and photographer

“It’s not the medium, it’s the vision.”

My creative medium started while I was working at a corporate office, and due to the economic slow down, I had less work, more time on my hands, and almost nothing to do. To stave off the despair that was not assuaged by research, or surfing the internet, or other mindless work-related tasks, I began taking discarded papers and doodling. I have always sketched, since about two years of age when I would doodle on paper at whatever bar my mother and her family would drag me to, trying to make the best of a bad situation. So, now, in my adult years, this therapy and art blossomed. I would take whatever discarded materials I could get and draw, then paint, decoupage, transform this trash into beauty. I admit, sometimes it is a dark beauty, but not dark by some intent, more like this quote from Bertolt Brecht:
“In the dark times, will there be singing? Yes, there will be singing, about the dark times.”
I have used sand, garbage, books, newspapers, whatever discarded materials are at hand, to create the beautiful works you see. In a disposable society, we have forgotten to give a value to all that we see. I, myself, have often felt like a disposable person, having been laid off from my job of eleven years. However, opportunity comes in many guises, and just as I rescue an old piece of cardboard from invisible disposal or incineration, I rescue myself from oblivion and all is transformed.
